Present simple lesson
A1(Elementary) level

Description

This lesson is designed for a group of young learners (ages 8–10, A1 level), and is based on Unit 3: "A Day in the Life" from Kid’s Box 3. The lesson aims to develop learners’ ability to talk about their daily routines using the present simple tense and time expressions (e.g., "at 7 o’clock", "in the morning").This lesson follows a previous one introducing telling the time and vocabulary for daily routines. It leads into the next lesson focused on reading a text about someone’s day and writing a paragraph about their own day.

Materials

Abc Coursebook

Main Aims

  • To enable learners to talk about their daily routines using the present simple and time expressions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice listening for specific information. To introduce and practice telling the time. To develop speaking confidence through structured dialogues.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To activate prior knowledge

Quick review: teacher shows clock flashcards. Students say the time. Ask: “What time do you wake up?”

Presentation (8-10 minutes) • Vocabulary review

Vocabulary Introduce routine verbs using flashcards and mime: wake up, get dressed, brush teeth, eat breakfast, go to school, etc. Choral repetition and TPR with students(audio from ex.3).

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • Grammar Focus and Listening

Use examples from the book and model present simple sentences on the board: * I wake up at 7 o’clock. * She goes to school at 8 o’clock. Highlight third-person 's' and use visuals to contrast "I" vs "He/She". Listening Task* (ex.1,track 35 – Audio from Kid’s Box): Students hear information about daily routine of a child and they need to match actions to times. This models both vocabulary and grammar in context.

Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Present 2 games through the projector: 1)Matching Exercise: Students match time phrases with the correct daily routine verbs. Focus is on accuracy. 2)Unscrambling Exercise: Give them time to choose, then check with the whole class feedback. Speaking Drills (Guided Pair Work)*: Use structured dialogue prompts: * What time do you get up? * I get up at 7 o’clock. Students interview each other on their daily routine and fill in a class survey.

Production (8-15 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

Class Survey Reporting*: Each student reports on a partner’s routine using full sentences: * Daria goes to school at 8 o’clock. She has lunch at 12, etc.
