Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for gist and detail in the context of trusting your instincts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice fluency and accuracy through pronunciation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students with a short activity that engages their top-down processing before the listening task

Present the picture of co-workers from the textbook to the class. Ask them how they think that the people know each other, where they think that they are, and what they might be talking about. How do these people know each other? Where are they in this photograph? What do you think that they are talking about?

Pre-Reading/Listening (9-11 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Quiz the the meaning and pronunciation of the words impression, unconscious and immediate from the audio sample with 2 google forms quizzes.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Listen to the audio sample and present the class with a moderately challenging listening task for specific information in the form of a google forms quiz. The quiz requires the students to select one of several possible endings to phrases that appear in the recording. Check the answers with the class.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks .

Give students time to read the questions. Play the recording again. Have students compare their responses in breakout rooms. 1. The company is still trying to fill its first accountant position. F. 2. Neither Hal nor Peter changed their opinions about the first candidate after the interview. T. 3. Hal didn't like that the first candidate didn't have all of the right qualifications. F. 4. According to Tracy, the book suggests that we should only "go with our gut feelings" about people. F. 5. Malcom Gladwell, the author mentioned during the conversation, believes in love at first sight. NG.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned from the audio, quizzes and conversations with peers.

Put students in breakout rooms to discuss the following questions: Can you think of anyone that you’ve met that you instantly liked or disliked? Have you ever changed your mind about someone that you didn’t initially get along with? Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not? Conduct feedback on the task. Try to collect speaking errors and type them on a slide for review at the end of the class.
