Description

In this lesson, we cover the parts of a house. In the first part, we will play a game of charades in order to elicit for the various rooms in a house. First, the teacher will start, then after the Ss know the words, the Ss will get up and play act the rooms. After that, we will looks at some pictures of the White House, and listen to a short interview. Ss will practice listening for questions, and put them in the right order. Once that is complete, we go back to parts of a house, where Ss are asked to fill out a floor plan, labeling the rooms with the correct names. Finally, there will be a PW exercise where Ss will ask each other where they do certain activities - i.e. sleep, watch tv and prepare food.

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about the White House in the context of an interview
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of parts of a house

Procedure

Guided Discovery (7-8 minutes) • To facilitate discovery of the names for parts of a house

Write "Parts of a house" on the WB Play-act the activities that would happen in the various rooms. Sleeping, eating, taking a shower, watching TV, reading. Elicit the words, write them down as they are elicited.

Controlled Practice of vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To provide practice of vocabulary

Ss are divided into two teams From each team a S is nominated. The nominated Ss are told a word. They must act out the word for their teams. First team to get it scores a point. Repeat until all words are acted out.

Listening for gist exercise (5-7 minutes) • To provide listening for gist practice in the context of an interview.

Play recording 1.47. Ask Ss what the recording is about. Put up slides of White House Read the questions on the WS slide. Play recording to until the first question is asked. Write 1 next to it. Pass out WS. Play recording again. Repeat if necessary. Peer check Write answers

Listening for detail exercise (5-7 minutes) • To provide listening for details practice in the context of an interview.

Go to next slide. Ss already have the WS. Try to elicit the correct answer for question 1. Play back the recording until the first question is answered. Write "4" in the blank. Play the complete recording. Repeat if necessary Peer check Write answers. Nominate Ss to read them.

Controlled Practice of vocabulary - application (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to apply vocabulary in a realistic setting

Put up floor plan. Pass out work sheet. Write Kitchen in the blank box. Ss work in pairs, fill out the WS Nominate Ss to come to board and write answers

Free Practice of vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To provide opportunity for Ss to practice their vocabulary in a conversational setting

Write the questions on the board. Nominate a Ss to RP. They read me the first question, I answer. I read them the question and they answer. Ss work in pairs, taking turns asking and answering the questions.
