Description

In this lesson, students will develop their listening skills (listening for gist and listening for detail) in the context of healthy foods and government contradictions about their recommendations. The lesson will start with a quick conversation between students to activate their knowledge on the subject, followed by a pre teaching of useful vocabulary. Then a listening for gist activity followed by a listening for detail activity. At the end, we will active their speaking skills with a conversation about the subject of the audio.

Main Aims

  • To enable students to develop their listening for gist and detail skills in the context of a survey to a young man and a woman about healthy foods and government food recommendations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to develop their speaking skills in the context of a survey to a man and a woman about healthy foods and government recommendations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- lead in showing images of delicious foods, asking them for 2 or 3 things about the topic to engage students and personalise the content. Ask some questions about the topic of the audio (without them knowing) to activate their knowledge of the subject and their top-down processing. - Instructions: - 1b in break out rooms. Check understanding. - feedback

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach vocabulary - present words students may find difficult: seldom: meaning, form and pronunciation. used to: " got into: " is a killer: " - practice in google docs/slides matching: give instructions, check understanding, feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Listening for gist: 1. Activate top down processing with some questions about the audio script. Not more than 3 or 4. 2. ex.3a in google forms: Give instructions, check understanding. 3. Open Class FeedBack

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Listening for detail: 1. ex 3c in google froms: Give instructions, check understanding. 2. check the answers in pairs or groups in break out rooms. 3. Open class FeedBack.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Post 10 min 1. ex. 3d: Give instructions, check understanding. 2. FeedBack 3. Delayed Error Correctiom
