Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about give tips on how to behave in the context of socializing.
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about What people say about social behaviors in their country? in the context of socializing.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to write some tips about social behaviors to advise someone visiting their countries.
  • Students will be able to organize these tips and pieces of advice and discuss them in groups.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students : What country you dream to visit? What things about that country you need to know about? Have students work in pairs to answer these questions. For early finishers, I will ask them to think of extra answer like why? After students finish answering the question, open a discussion with the whole class by asking them to raise a response card with the country they have chosen.

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Explain that students will hear the eight people in the order in which they are listed on the page. Give students time to read the topics in the box. Students listen and match. Turn students that extracts are quite short, and that they should listen to get by finding clues as to the topic(s) being talked about by each person. Emphasize that they only need to listen for the topic, and they will listen again to find further information. Pause the recording after each speaker to give students time to think and compare answers. So through answers with the class."

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Divide students into pairs so they can help each other .Give students simple instruction so they can follow them. Pause the recording after each extract to give students time to make a few notes and to compare their ideas in pairs. Check answers with the whole class. ANSWERS Behaviour between the sexes: Amy says that a woman on a date should always do or say/split the bill. Khalid says that it’s normal to go on dates with a girlfriend; in the approved first. Being late: Rosa says that it’s okay to arrive an hour late when visiting friends, unless they ask you to be punctual by saying ‘hora inglesa’. How you greet and address people: Paweł says that men usually shake hands to greet each other every time they meet. Smoking: Ian says that it’s not acceptable to smoke in people’s houses, unless the hosts smoke. The way people dress: Lee Kuans says that it’s important to be fashionable, especially for women, and to dress smartly. While-Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Divide students into groups where stronger students help the weaker students. Tell students that the extracts are not in the same order as the phrases. Pause the recording after each extract to allow students time to write the missing words. Play the recording again if necessary rather than giving the answers yourself.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will use flashcards to write down some tips they will advise someone visiting Egypt and to to stick them on the WB. Students will work in groups to prepare as pieces of advice as they can. Then they will use Kahoot to vote for the best group. The use of technology will aid in increasing their participation. Moreover, the use of flashcard and sticking them on the board will motivate students with kinesthetic characteristics. Teacher ask students to use Grammarly to check their answers.
