This is a reading lesson about relationships

Materials

Main Aims

  • In this lesson students will be able to read for gist.
  • To provide a reading text for students to assist them to formulate their own decisions about the topic.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in the pronunciation to six vocabulary words.
  • To give students speaking practice by forming their own opinions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show PP slide. Think what causes family disputes - alone. Share your ideas with your partner. Get a few ideas from the ss. FB

Pre-Reading (9-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask Ss: What word is dispute? (n/c) give a synonym for dispute? Write a_ _ _ _ _ _ t (n, u) on the board. I know / I think I know/ I don't know: punish (v1), curse (n/c), slipper (n/c), straight answer (n/c). Update the table with the words. S work alone. (2 min) Work in your small group (2 min) FB: Write the words in the table and check meaning. Read the summary of the book and: - guess what was the punishment? - What argument did they have? S work in small groups and predict the answers. FB: Get 2 - 3 groups to give their answers.

While-Reading *1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Put the text on the wall. Ss work alone. Read the text and answer the questions. T/F/D When finished peer checking. FB w/c

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Work in a group of 4. Read the text again (give handout). Write 3 more questions Samad asked Alsana. Write her answers. FB: Groups share their sentences

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In groups of 3-4: Write on the board: Was Samad wrong to send his son to Bangladesh? Was Alsana right to punish her husband? Think of reasons for and against each decision. FB: Groups share their ideas.

If time (1-2 minutes) • To provide more Freer speaking practice.

Draw a table on the board. Write Samad and Alsana. Ask Ss to describe the two people. Ss write it on the board.
