Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Hostels in the context of places to stay at during a trip

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice and introduce some new vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show Ss some pictures to show that we are going to talk about traveling. T: in pairs talk about 3 places we can stay at during a trip after some time I ask Ss to give me some answers (try to elicit "hostel")

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will show Ss some pictures of different hostels. T: in pairs talk about what do we call a "hostel"? I will ask for some answers,I will try to elicit words like: cheap, roommate, other people, share, ...

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T: Tell me the the country of the hostel we have in text in 1 minute. (can we talk?- No) I will give them handouts in two different colors and give them 1 minute to find the answer. T: anyone knows the answer? why did you choose that?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will put Ss with same paper color in same groups and ask them to answer the questions. here I can clarify the meaning of some words if needed. after a while I give each group an answer key and ask them to practice to memorize every answer. T: find someone from another group and sit in front of each other. (don't bring your papers) Ss ask and answer questions that they have memorized.

Post-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In their pairs, I ask Ss to take a look at their texts and talk about which one of these hostels is better for them. At the end I ask from Some Ss to tell me which one is their choice and why.
