Main Aims

  • Use passive voice effectively to describe veterinary procedures and case updates

Subsidiary Aims

  • Communicate clearly in simulated handovers, rounds, or team briefings

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Instructor gives 2–3 simple case update lines in active voice: “We gave the vaccine this morning.” “The tech clipped the wound and cleaned it.” Students rephrase in passive: “The vaccine was given this morning.” “The wound was clipped and cleaned by the tech.”

Semi-Controlled Practice (38-40 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Main Simulation – Shift Handoff Rounds Setup: Pairs or small groups Each group receives a short case summary card with patient info and recent procedures Task: One student gives a shift handoff to another (or presents to the group), using: Passive voice for all clinical actions Optional indirect question prompts Reported speech for what the owner said, if included

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Debrief Discussion “Was it easy or difficult to use passive voice naturally?” “What made your report sound more professional?” “Which structure did you default to — active or passive?” Instructor gives quick pronunciation or clarity feedback as needed.

Wrap-Up (3-5 minutes) • To close the lesson

Write a 2-sentence case update using only passive voice + one reported statement from a client or colleague.
