Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Instructor reads (or displays) actions, and students decide: Should this be described in active or passive voice? Examples: “The vet closed the incision.” “The incision was closed by the vet.”

Productive Task(s) (63-65 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Guided Practice – Passive Voice in Procedures In pairs or triads, students: Choose or are given a common vet procedure (e.g., vaccinations, spay surgery, parasite treatment) Prepare a 3–5 sentence explanation entirely in passive voice Examples: “The patient was prepped and sedated. The incision was made along the midline...” Each group presents to another group, who listens and provides one follow-up question Main Task – “Reported Incident” Simulation Each pair/group receives a fictional incident report or complaint Students must: Discuss the situation Create a spoken oral report using: Passive voice for actions Reported speech for what was said Indirect questions to clarify unknown details A conditional sentence about what could’ve gone better 💬 Example: “The dog was administered the wrong dosage.” “The owner said he thought it was the evening dose.” “Do you know if the chart had been updated?” “If we had reviewed the chart together, this wouldn’t have happened.” Groups present their case to the class

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
