Possessive s. Family relationships.

Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the use of the possessive s and will put it to use in speaking exercises. SS will use the context provided by listening and and do activities based around the theme relationships and will develop spoken examples of their own using the grammar taught and the context providing.

Main Aims

  • To present and practice possessive s to talk about relationships.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and practice vocabulary to describe relationships e.g. brother, wife etc.

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead-in) (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and make the context of the lesson interesting for the SS

-Display realia (picture) What can you see on the picture? Who are these people?

Stage 2 (Match Vocab) (7-10 minutes) • To provide new vocab and a controlled listening practice for specific information

-Pass out HO's for SS to guess and match vocabulary words with the people on the picture (demo the first one loud) -Write (1-4) on the board and write SS's answers after completing the task for visual feedback -Listen and check the answers. Play CD 1, track 1.7 -Play again if needed

Stage 3 (Pronunciation) (5-7 minutes) • To practice the pronunciation of vocab

-Draw the stress pattern on the board -Exemplify one and two syllable patterns -New vocab is written on the board -SS work in groups divide the vocab words according to the stress pattern -Listen and check your answers. Play CD 1, track 1.8 -Play again if needed -SS practice saying the words

Stage 4 (Grammar) (8-12 minutes) • To present and practice the possessive s that can be applied in the context of relationship

-Draw a family tree on the board -Demonstrate the use of 's/s' -Ask the questions refer to the family tree -Grammar revision SB p.132 ex.1 -Check the answers

Stage 5 (Speaking activity) (8-11 minutes) • To provide a controlled speaking practice (after aims completed in order to demonstrate the pronunciation of vocabulary and use of possessive s and develop productive skills in general)

-Split class into groups -Ask students to display the picture of their family and tell their group who is on the picture -Revision
