Reading for detail
A1 + (Elementary) level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn about reading for detail in the context of accommodation for language students.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in reading for detail in the context of accommodation for language students.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking/vocabulary related to accommodation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Ss will guess the topic of the lesson by looking at the pictures ( logos ) on the board. "Accommodation" in general and "Accommodation for language students" more specifically. I will ask the following questions to students in order to make them guess the topic. "Do you know any of these logos/brands?" "When/Why do we use them?" "Have you used any of them before?" "Will you use any of them if you need to travel abroad for learning English?"

Introducing New Vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To introduce some of the new vocabulary to the Ss prior to the reading exercise.

- I will teach the following vocabulary through the use of some pictures together with CCQs. *Sharing flat? *Bedsit? *House-sit? *Childcare? *Pcm? -I will focus on eliciting answers from the Ss to make sure they understand what each of these new vocabulary means.

Pre-Reading / GTKY Activity (Use of New Vocabulary via speaking) (10-12 minutes) • To enable students get more familiar with the use of the new vocabulary in the set context

-I will put the Ss in 2 groups, A and B -Ss will stand up and gather in opposite sides of the classroom. -I will show them a demo of the exercise: *One student will be given a ball (made up of paper), he/she will start talking about his/her preference of accommodation if he/she goes abroad to learn English or to work. i.e. "If I go abroad to learn English, I would like to share a flat with two local students." or "If I go abroad to work, I would like to rent a bedsit". When he/she finishes talking, he/she will throw the ball to the other side of the classroom ( towards the other group), the one who catches the ball will do the same and we will keep going for a while.

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information

- I will put the advertisements up on the board. -I will put the class into 6 groups, A, B, C, D, E, F - I will hand out the copies of the chart you have prepared to everyone. - I will invite each group to find out the information they need on the chart. -When each group finish, I will also hand out the advertisements and ask everyone to work in pairs to complete the rest of the exercise. -FB will be taken for the whole class.

While Reading + Post Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to read for detailed information and reflect their own opinions on what they have read

-The advertisements will still be on the board. -Ss will be grouped in pairs and will be handed out a set of profiles of people who are going to Cambridge to study English for three months. -They will first be asked to work on their desks to match the profiles with the advertisements and then come to the board to match them. They will be asked to stick their choices on the board. -I will mention that there is no right or wrong answers. -I will put on board: " I think accommodation A is good for Christophe because ...." -Finally I will get feedback from different students and ask the rest of the class if they agree or disagree.
