Description

In this lesson students watch an extract from BBC documentary about the impact of the internet. Students study and practice vocabulary and improve listening and speaking skills. The lesson starts with discussions and then is followed by an introduction and later watching an extract from a documentary. Finally, students being introduced with related vocabulary in the context, discuss and share their opinions.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in discussions in the context of internet, technology, communication

Procedure

Stage 1 (lead In) (4-6 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and make it intersting for the students

Teacher writes the names of 3 websites he/she visits everyday. Teacher encourages students to ask questions about each one. Students then work in pairs and write their own 3 favorite websites and share in pairs. In feedback, teacher nominates students to share their partner's information with the class.

Stage 2 (Pair Discussion) (4-6 minutes) • To make them more interested to the topic and get them to come up with some new ideas

Teacher writes a question on the board: "How has internet changed the world?". Teacher then puts them in pairs and asks them to discuss with their partner. Teacher monitors and helps with vocabulary, any new words or phrases. In feedback teacher nominates two or three students to share their ideas with the class.

Stage 3 (Pre-teaching Vocabulary) (6-8 minutes) • To provide new vocabulary that can be used in the context of internet and technology

Teacher passes out handouts for students. Teacher asks students to write a word or phrase from the list to replace each of the words or phrases in bold. Students then check their answers in groups In feedback, teacher checks if students understand each of the expressions. Teacher passes out main material (Speakout Intermediate page:40 3.4). Teacher goes through sentences in 2A and asks if any of them were mentioned in students' previous discussions.

Stage 4 (Reading an Introduction) (3-5 minutes) • To help the students to understand the gist and what the program is about

Students read the text in 3 and discuss the questions in pairs. In feedback, teacher elicits students' answers. Teacher elicits the words 'pioneers' and 'censorship'. Students read the questions in 4. Teachers checks if students understand questions.

Stage 5 (Watching part of a Documentary DVD) (7-10 minutes) • To improve students' listening comprehension skills in order to follow series of events and information

'Now, focus on putting the sentences in order you hear. Don't worry about the language you don't understand. We are going to watch again.' Teacher plays DVD while students put the sentences in the order they hear. Students after watching DVD, check their answers with their partner. In feedback, teacher elicits the answers from class *In case students can't order the extracts correctly, teacher may replay DVD again.

Stage 6 (Replaying DVD) (6-8 minutes) • To practice scan listening and comprehension skills in listening for specific information

Students match the people to the extracts a-g in 5A in pairs. Teacher plays DVD again for students to check their answers. in feedback, teacher elicits answers from class.

Stage 7 (Group Discussion) (5-7 minutes) • To provide a chance for the students to use their knowledge and vocabulary to have a discussion in the theme

Students discuss the questions in groups. Teacher monitors and supports in case they need help. *In case there is some time left, in feedback, teacher can nominate students from each group to share their opinions with the class.
