Lesson Plan 5
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students practice their listening, writing and speaking skills in the context of travel. The lesson starts with an exercise to listen for gist. Ss will then do a matching activity, followed by a listening activity where Ss can check their answers. Ss will then have to write about their trip to another city or country and share it with their classmates.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using text and audio recording about trips to London.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide writing and speaking practice in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To set the lesson context, T will show pictures of the Big Ben, London Eye and Tower Bridge, and asks Ss to guess which country they are located. T will ask if any Ss have been to London and ask them to share their travel experiences if they have been there. Otherwise, T will ask what Ss know about London E.g. weather, places of interest, double decker bus, etc. This is a great way to engage Ss and develop culture awareness.

Gist Listening (3-5 minutes) • To allow Ss to practice gist listening

T gives Ss a HO. On the HO, Ss have to answer three questions: "Where did she go", "Who did she go with?" and "What was the weather like?" T then reads aloud to Ss about her trip to London. T checks answers with the class. This exercise is to allow Ss to practice gist listening and to prepare Ss for the following detailed listening task. It is also important to expose Ss to the different English accent.

Pre- Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the detailed listening activity

T groups students into pairs. T gives instructions about the next task. Ss have to match number 1-9 with a-g. T asks ICQs. T hands out the material to Ss. As an example, T will do question number 1 with the class. As the level of knowledge and skills of Ss varies, it is more effective if Ss work in pairs. This not only motivates them but also increases STT.

Listening for details (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening tasks

T plays an audio recording (2.39) for Ss to check their answers. Once completed, T will group 3 Ss in a group, to check their answers with each other. Then T confirms answers with WC. By allowing Ss to check answers with their partner, Ss will feel more confident to share answers during feedback session, especially for the weaker Ss. T then explains to Ss that there are two kinds of questions: You can begin with "Did you..." or Begin with a question word (Where, What, Who..) T gives one example: "Did you go to London?" or "Where did you do?" T then asks Ss for other examples, "How about Who, What or When, etc"

Writing and Speaking exercise (12-15 minutes) • To provide students to practice their writing and speaking skills

T asks Ss to write about a place they have visited. It can be either overseas or another city. Ss can refer to the exercise where Alejandro's talks about his trip to London. Once Ss complete the task, T will put them in pairs and Ss share their stories with their partner. T then ask a few Ss to share their partner's story to the class. The aim of this exercises is for Ss to practice their writing and speaking skills. Additionally, Ss will be able to practice "Simple Past Tense" as well.
