Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Instructor reads or displays informal/direct questions. Students work in pairs to rewrite them as indirect questions Examples: “Where’s the file?” → “Could you tell me where the file is?” “Did the owner call back?” → “Do you know if the owner called back?”

Semi-Controlled Practice (33-35 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Setup: Students work in pairs or triads Each student receives a case card Task: Vets must ask clients a series of indirect questions based on the case Clients improvise answers Roles rotate so everyone practices the questioning Example prompts: “Can you tell me when the symptoms started?” “Do you know if she ate something unusual?” “Would it be okay to run a few tests today?”

Free Practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Activity: Students receive a brief tech/assistant note and must simulate reporting to a vet using indirect questions: “Do you know if the owner signed the release form?” “Could you tell me what’s been prescribed so far?” Practice both: Asking for clarification Politely requesting instructions

Wrap-Up (3-5 minutes) • To close the lesson

Exit writing prompt: “Write down two indirect questions you could use in a real-life interaction at work.”
