Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
Form indirect questions using polite, professional structures
Subsidiary Aims
-
Distinguish between direct and indirect question formats
Procedure (82-90 minutes)
Activity: Students match direct questions with their indirect equivalents Example: “Where is the bathroom?” → “Could you tell me where the bathroom is?” “What time does the clinic close?” → “Do you know what time the clinic closes?” Instructor asks: “Which one sounds more professional?” “When might you use each?”
Quick Notes on Structure: No question word order in the second clause Start with: Can you tell me… Do you know… Would it be possible to know… Could you explain… Practice Examples: Students convert direct → indirect questions using prompts
Activity: Students are given 15 direct veterinary-related questions In pairs, they: Convert each one into an indirect question Practice saying them aloud in a professional tone Guided Practice – “Client Inquiry Roleplay” Setup: Students work in pairs or triads. Each student receives a role: Vet Client Assistant Task: Clients ask questions using indirect forms (with prompts), and vets answer or ask follow-ups Example Exchanges: “Would you mind telling me how long the treatment will take?” “Can you explain if this is going to affect her appetite?” After each round, roles rotate and students swap new prompts
Quick board review: What structures were used well? What errors were common? Students write 2 indirect questions they used today in their real context (clinic, pet situation, etc.)
