Materials

Main Aims

  • Strengthen comfort with backshifting and reporting verbs

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice longer speech using reported language

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (13-15 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Instructor provides a short scripted dialogue between vet and client Read the dialogue Then, in pairs, take turns retelling what the client said Example: Client: “I forgot the vaccine date.” → Student: “The client said she had forgotten the vaccine date.”

Exposure (13-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Prompt Cards: Students receive a mix of questions and requests from clients (I’ll generate 15). They must: Rephrase the question or request using reported speech Decide on the best reporting verb: asked, requested, wondered, etc.

Productive Task(s) (48-50 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Activity: Each pair receives a brief vet-client scenario One plays the client, the other the vet Then, the “vet” must retell the whole situation to a third party using reported speech After swapping roles, students switch scenarios Open Reflection Activity Prompt: “Think of something important a client or coworker told you recently.” Students write it as direct speech Then, convert it into reported speech Share in pairs or small groups

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Quick error correction and highlights Students reflect: Which reporting verb was most useful today? What’s one phrase they’ll use more confidently now?
