Main Aims

  • Use reported speech naturally when explaining or summarizing client interactions

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice professional handoff situations between colleagues

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Activity: Quickfire Memory Chain Instructor begins with: “The owner said her cat hadn’t eaten since yesterday.” Next student must continue: “And she said he was also hiding.” Each student adds a new sentence, rephrased in reported speech

Semi-Controlled Practice (33-35 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Main Task – “Client to Vet to Supervisor” Relay Setup: Students work in triads (Client → Vet → Supervisor) Each group receives a client script or situation Student A plays the client reading/speaking their version Student B listens and reports it to Student C (the “supervisor”) Student C must then summarize the case again using reported speech Focus Points: Use accurate structure Keep tone professional Clarify information flow (who said what, when, why) Examples of language expected: “The client said her dog had vomited twice since morning.” “She asked if we could run a blood test.” “He told me the medication hadn’t worked.”

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

After the relay, students reflect on: Was anything miscommunicated? How easy was it to remember and rephrase? What helped make the report clearer? They share 1–2 examples that were difficult to rephrase and compare with groupmates

Wrap-Up (3-5 minutes) • To close the lesson

Students write one sentence from the client’s perspective Then, underneath, they rewrite it using reported speech
