Procedure (82-90 minutes)
Prompt Discussion: “What might happen if you misunderstand or misreport a client’s words?” Instructor writes direct quotes on board: “My cat hasn’t eaten all day.” “Can you call me with the results?” “She’s been scratching behind her ears.” Students attempt to report these:
Quick Review: Backshifting: is → was, have seen → had seen, will → would Reporting Verbs: said, told, asked, explained, added Questions: word order changes, use of “if” or “whether” Mini Drill: Transform 2–3 short client statements as a class
Students receive direct quotes from fictional clients In pairs, they: Read the quote aloud Partner transforms it into reported speech Discuss which reporting verb fits best Activity: Pairs receive short case updates One student reads the “client version” aloud Partner takes notes and then reports the case to a third party Focus on structure, tone, and accuracy
