Description

In this lesson the students will be introduced to the common adjectives to describe physical appearance of the people and will practice using the adjectives. The lesson will start with some visuals to give the idea for adjectives, then students will do drilling to ensure that they gain confidence to speak. In this part of the lesson there will be clarification of MFPA (adjectives). After presentation they will be provided practice in short dialogues. (A: “What does s/he look like?” B: “He’s short, thin man. He has black hair. He has glasses etc. “. During the practice phase they will also have a model listening for describing people. (course book track 1.44) In the production phase they will be asked to start a dialogue with their partners (pw) to describe the people in the picture. Those pictures will be celebrity couples. (e.g. David/Victoria Beckham) A will describe the male, B will describe the female. FB will be given after the activity. (Error Correction) If time there will be hw check from the previous lesson.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The lesson will start with a short story of Betty. “This is Betty. She’s 40 years old. She isn’t married. She’s in love with Daniel. But he doesn’t like Betty. Because she’s not beautiful. She’s short and fat. She also has glasses. Daniel is a handsome/good-looking man. He loves thin and tall woman. This is Sofia. Daniel is in love with her. Because she is not ugly. She’s thin and tall.”

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Board layout: adjectives in jumbled order will be written on top of the board and blank categories will be set underneath the adjectives. (However there will be some pictures on top of each section) Pictures for adjectives will be on both sides of the board. This stage will start with Q&A for the pictures. T will try to elicit the adjectives from the ss by asking questions. (4 min.) Is Betty beautiful? Is Betty young? Is Sofia ugly? Is Daniel ugly? Is Sofia short? Is Betty tall? Is Betty thin? Is Sofia fat? What colour is Betty’s hair? Does Daniel have dark hair? After certain exposure to the questions and adjectives students will be given a piece of paper with an adjective written and asked to match the words with the pictures.(in pairs) Then T will draw the attention to the board and ask them the concept words "height", "weight" , "age" , "hair", "looks". The questions may be "Is adjective "old" related to/about "weight" (pointing at the Picture) or "height"?". Ss will be asked to elicit the answers. They will be given pieces of paper to match with the sections. (in pairs)

Highlighting-Clarification (4-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

This stage will cover the clarification of the language focus. For clarification students will be given one part of the sentence, they will form the sentences. (w/c) "He is a handsome." "He's a handsome man." then they will drill chorally. Finger contraction will be used also for "He is..." and "He's" Then the Word "woman" will be given and ask to demonstrate using fingers. For plural form they will be provided the Word "child" after drilling with child, plural form "children" will be given to see if they can form the sentence correctly. The sentences will be written and clarification will be demonstrated on the board.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Listening ex. (track 1.44) will be used in this stage. This listening will be used to provide a model for the students. The students will have a look at the picture of Brian and Jane. The student will be asked to describe Brian and Jane. Then they will look at the questions: "Where is Brian?" "What does the woman talk to him about?" Ss will write down the answers and check with their partners.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further (listen for details) and prepare students for free practice

At this stage ss will be asked to look at the pictures in the coursebook p.29 and the names of the people. T will ask them to listen to the dialogue and try to hear the descriptive adjectives that define the pictures. Then they will listen again to match the pictures with the names of the people. After the listening T will ask ss to get the answer. Ss will listen again to check their answers and be asked to say the adjectives they heard. Then w/c fb will be given.

Free Practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will work in pairs and each pair will be given a famous couple. (in pairs) Student A will describe the male and Student B will describe the female. They will talk about the physical apperance of the couple to eachother. Teacher will monitor for the errors. Then a whole class feedback will be given.
