Teaching practice 2
Elementary A1 level

Description

This lesson sets the context for all three lessons. Ss may be familiar with most of the family vocabulary, but need practice using it appropriately and accurately. The lesson will also expose the learners to possessive ‘s, but this is not the focus of the lesson. It is the main aim of the following lesson; therefore, teacher can help learners use it just as a chunk of language in models and drills, but don’t spend time looking at how to use it or what it means.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce/review and give Ss practice in family vocabulary

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reading, speaking & listening

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • to elicit the topic - family

Play the game hangman in order to review some family vocabulary, e.g. father, mother, son, daughter and so on.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a family tree

Using the pictures, elicit the family vocab step by step – building up the tree of a Royal family on the w/b. Don’t write anything at this stage – but remember to drill, e.g. Charles is William's father. – do lots of repetition.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Then get Ss to practise in pairs – looking at the tree & saying who each person is in relation to the others.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Get Ss to do ex2 – grouping the family vocab according to gender – use the ans key to check

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Introduce the family on p. 16. Get Ss to read & fill in the gaps with the correct vocab – using the pictures to help them. Let them check in pairs & then listen to the CD to check their answers.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give Ss your blank family tree – get them to ask you questions – “Who’s Peter?” - & answer with simple sentences, e.g “He’s my brother.” - Ss listen & complete the tree – make sure different Ss ask you the questions. – Get Ss to check in pairs - & then check (using the ans key)

Semi-controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

If time – as further practice Ss could work in pairs to ask & ans about your tree – e.g. “Who’s Peter?” “He’s Adriane’s/her brother.”
