Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about video games in the context of e-sports

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of e-sports

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tracher puts the students in pairs and isntructs them to answer the question: "What are the pros and cons of playing video games?" and make a short pros and cons list. Students discuss the question. Then the teacher instructs the pairs to compare their answers with another pair. Whole-class feedback.

Pre-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher asks students what they know about e-sports (What are s-sports? Do you like e-sports? Why/Why not?) to prepare them for the listening. Teacher then shows students pictures of sSports players playing games. Students answer questions.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher gives students one minute to prepare for the "Listen for Gist" exercise. Stufents then listen to the audio (4 minutes 26 seconds) and answer the questions. Students then compare their answers. Whole-class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Teacher gives students one minute to read the questions. Students then listen to thew audio (4 minutes 26 seconds) and answer the questions. Students then compare their answers. Whole-calss feedback. (If students have difficulty understanding a section of the audio, the teacher can show the students the transcript.)

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher puts the students in pairs and gives them 3 questions: - In your opinion, what is the difference between a sport and a game? - Do you agree with the speaker's arguments? Which of her points do you think are strong or weak? - Do you thinks eSports should be an Olympic sport? Why/Why not? Students discuss the questions. Teacher observes for fluency; doesn't correct grammar unless it's absolutely necessary. Whole-class feedback and open discussion.
