Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, learners will have a better understanding of reported speech and will have had practice using that language and be better able to talk about coincidences

  • to provide students with an opportunity to write different sentences in reported speech

Procedure

Lead in (5-7 minutes) • to engage students in and activate students’ knowledge of the topic

show them a picture of me and a friend and tell them a short story. Yesterday, I was browsing at a shopping mall that suddenly I saw another woman was wearing exactly the same dress as mine. I went nearer to her, and when she turned back her face, I saw she was an old school friend of mind. Wow , such a coincidence. Have you experienced such unrelated events happening at the same time unexpectedly?

Reading and listening task (10 minutes) • reading: to practice reading for the gist/ listening: to contextualize and introduce the target language, reported speech

students read the four short stories on page 58 in their book to understand the gist and with their partners discuss their prediction of how they end. Then they report it to the class. Then they lsietn to the complete version of the stories. Teacher asks which ending was surprising to them and the volunteers asnwer the questions. Then teacjer asks which coincidence was the most surprising in their view? volunteers answer the question.

highlighting the target language (3-5 minutes) • to highlight the target language so that learners are focused on it

students read the script of the stories on page 171 and highlight the matching sentences with the items on page 58, part 2a

clarifying target language (10-15 minutes) • to clarify meaning and form of reported speech

Teacher asks students to talk about the differences in the matching sentences. and marks the differences on verb tenses and subject adaptations of the sentences. when they worked on all sentences, teacher asks students to find a pattern of change in all matching sentences. a little teacher help might be necessary. Then teacher shows them a table and asks students to write the matching verb tenses from the direct speech and indirect speech in it. Teacher asks some CCQs to make sure students have learned the lesson well. then teacher clarifies on the change of subjects as well.

controlled practice (7-10 minutes) • to provide controlled written practice focused on using the language accurately

students read the short story on page 59 part 1. one students gives a short summary. students change the sentences from the direct conversation of Feiffer and Hopkins into indirect speech. students check their answers in a group and then in the class with the teacher. (some sentences might need to be analyzed part by part)

controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • to provide controlled written practice focused on using the language accurately.

students change the direct questions on part 2a into indirect speech. Then they check their answers in a group then they check it in the class with the teacher

Freer practice (10 minutes) • to provide freer written practice and use the language productively

students take the role of the interviewer and write the report of their questions and answers of the interview with celebrities on part 2a, using indirect speech.

feedback (5-7 minutes) • to provide students with the feedback about the correct production of indirect speech on their written task

students choose two of their classmates and ask for giving feedback. They will have to check the form (the verb tenses and the subject changes) in all the sentences. teacher actively monitors all groups and have a final check on all the reports.
