Places- Past Simple Lesson

In this Lesson the students will do a reading about places like Cairo and how people write about their travels. Firstly, they will be exposed to places and things. Then they will be asked to skim through the text to answer some questions. Then they will be asked to correct the order of the travels Mike and Anna did. This exposure will help them create their own travel log at the end.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about places in the context of travel

  • To provide clarification of holidays words in the context of travels


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*T will write the topic "A few days in..." on the WB. *T will ask students to predict what are they talking about, let them discuss in pairs. *T will then give a personal example: A few days in Istanbul; relating that she is from another country. *Ss will discuss in pairs where they would like to go?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

*T will then paste a picture of map of Egypt on the board & ask where this is? *Ss will give their feedback by predictions. *T will then put up a picture of a Pyramid & ask if they know what that is? *Ss feedback and predictions will be taken. *T will drill them on this word as this is new vocabulary for them. *T will then paste more pictures on the WB such as airplane, hotels, shops & markets, restaurant, Takism Square, Nile. *T will then Ss to discuss in pairs what the topic of discuss is today?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

*T will paste a picture of Anna & Mike on the WB and tell the Ss that they are taking the trip to Cairo. *T will give the text to the Ss & ask them to skim it. *T will give them a Ho in which they have questions they have to answer in pairs about Mike & Anna. Q1. Where did Mike and Anna go when in Cairo? Q2. What Mike & Anna couldn't see when in Cairo? Q3. What did Anna buy in Cairo? Q4. What didn't Mike buy in Cairo? *Ss have have to a scan for the answers in their text in Pws. *Ss will discuss in PWs and as a whole class.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

*T will do an activity with the Ss in which she will divide the class in 3 groups: 5 May, 6 May & 7 May. *T will paste cards with words on the other WB such as airport x2, taxi, trams, 5:00am didn't sleep, got up, souk, coffee pot, carpet, Citadel, restaurant, Nile, Pyramids, 5:30am, Mumbai, India, 8:00am *Ss have to go in groups and paste the correct things Mike & Anna did on their respective days on the other WB under the dates. *Ss will then put the tags in correct order. * Wc will discuss together what Mike & Anna did by explain what they did on their respective days.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

*T will ask the Ss to write 5 sentences what they will do if they were traveling to Istanbul for the first time in PWs *Twill ask the students to read it out aloud to the whole class
