Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in reading for gist, specific information and detail in the context of adults living at home.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in speaking/present simple/use of vocabulary related to "family".

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will guess the topic of the lesson by looking at the pictures on the board. "Family" and "Living at home" I will ask the following questions among others to them in order to elicit family vocabulary: "Who do you live with?" "Are you married/single?" "Do you live alone?" "Does your grandfather/grandmother live with you?"

Pre-Reading Task (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The pictures that was on the board in the previous tasks will be given to them as handouts. Ss will match the picture handouts with the numbers on the family tree. Ss will work in pairs and class FB will be taken.

Pre-Reading Speaking Task (5-6 minutes) • To use the vocabulary introduced in the lead-in/warmer session

Ss will work in pairs and discuss the questions in Speaking Ex1 in the chapter 2C-Still at home. FB to the whole class.

While-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

Reading Ex1 Lead-in: Show Ss the picture in the text and the title of the task and ask them some questions in order to get their attention to the text. "Who can you see?" "How old is he?" "What's a castle?" ... Then, Ss will read the text paragraph by paragraph to find out in each paragraph; * "What's the problem?" or "Is it a problem for his mother/father/Andy?" Ss will discuss in pairs after reading each paragraph and FB will be given to the whole class.

While-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Reading Ex2 Ss will read the text individually and underline the correct word. Ss will compare their answers with their pairs. FB will be given to the whole class.

Post-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Reading Ex3 Ss will discuss in groups of 4about their own opinions. FB will be given to the whole class. They will be given the following questions to work around: "What's your opinion?" "Do you think it is/is not a problem that Andy still lives with his parents?" "Do you think it is fine/right?" "Do you know any person in Andy's situation?" "Do you live at home?"

Final follow-up writing task (7-10 minutes) • To personalize the context of the class using the vocabulary and phrases

Students will work individually. They will think of somebody they know (including themselves) who is living with his/her parents although he/she is grown up with a job and write down 4-5 sentences using the vocabulary they have learnt in this class. They will be asked to think about the following questions as well: "What does his/her mother/father think about it?" "What does he/she think about it?" "What do you think about it?"
