In this lesson, students learn about methods of expressing opinions. The students will learn and practice the structure 'it's + adjective' to express opinion.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification/review and practice of verb patterns (v-ing vs 'to infinitive') with adjectives to express opinions in the context of communication.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop and enhance the students' speaking skills

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write amazing, difficult and tiring on board. Ask the students what they find amazing, difficult or tiring.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

MFPA Elicit - how do we give/express an opinion or thought - ask questions Focus on the 'It's + adjective' structure and write three sentences on the board to demonstrate the structure. Write one false way to do it and one correct one. Ask the students which one is right to say. Drilling.

Practice the structure (1-2 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form

Give the students the sentences from exercise 1 of unit 2.1 on page 15 and ask them to complete the gaps with the adjectives with their partner.

Useful Language (4-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Use exercise 2.a and cut the sentences so the students can unjumble the sentences in the right order. Let them work in groups of 3-4. The group who finishes first wins. Drilling.

Feedback and Error Correction (1 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production

Put the rightly ordered sentences on board and let the students check.

Productive Task(s) (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ask students how they can express their opinion; write it on the board Students get in groups again and discuss the sentences - do they agree or disagree and ask them to give reasons for their opinions (ex 2.b) Monitor and take notes of the language they use.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

In feedback, find out whether they agree or disagree with the sentences.

Speaking Activity (1-2 minutes) • To encourage spoken fluency

Ask one to two students what they think is a waste of time and why. Check understanding of the words from the exercise and drill. Ask the students to tick one thing from each list. Learners work on their own.

Speaking Activity (3-5 minutes) • To encourage spoken fluency

Ask some students what they would add to the list and ask them for reasons. Group work. Ask the students to work in groups and discuss their ideas; make sure they agree on three things from the list. Monitor and take notes.

Feedback and Error Correction (2-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Ask each group what they agreed on. Give feedback on the language they used during the discussion.
