Main Aims

  • To introduce and give students practice in functional language for describing people in the context of a tour group.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about describing words in the context of physical appearance.
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of physical appearance.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To give students an idea of the targeted language.

Teacher will write on the board helpful phrases and adjectives that are commonly used. Teacher can look at pg.29 "Functional Language : describing people" from Straightforward elementary Student's Book (second edition) by Lindsay Clandfield for ideas if they choose. This will allow the students to have a context for the rest of the lesson and a template to refer back to in upcoming activities.

Listening (8-10 minutes) • To have students listen for words and write sentences about appearance from the word that's given to them.

Explain to students that they will be listening to 9 words and that they will write those words down in the handout. After they've listened to it twice, teacher will check what words they've written by nominating students for the answer. Students will then write a sentence from the word and teacher will demonstrate the first two for them. Teacher will nominate different people for answers.

Form Correction (8 minutes) • To have students correct sentences that have the wrong form.

Explain to students that they will have sentences that need correcting. Teacher hand students other half of handout and they will work individually for this task. Later they will peer check and teacher will nominate students for their corrections.

Speaking/Describing Activity (5-8 minutes) • Students will be able to describe a student in the class.

Students will be split up into two groups-A and B (if it's a very large group, split into two big groups before this). Match A and B partners. Tell students to pick a student in the class and describe them to their partner. Their partner must guess who it is. During this time, monitor and take notes to see how accurately students are speaking. After students each correctly guess, go over notes with students.

Matching Activity (15-20 minutes) • Students will describe and ask questions about a physical description and try to find their identical twin.

Give each student a card cut out from the TP#2 Find Your Double photocopy. Students will go around and ask questions trying to find another student with the same card. Once they find their partner, they will sit with them and start a picture activity. There are two sets of photos that i will give. I will give one photo to partner A and the other to partner B. They will then ask questions trying to decide if they have the same photo.

Ending (4-5 minutes) • To check answers from last activity.

For each picture, have pairs of partners tell you if they have the same picture or not. Ask others in class if they agree and go through all of them. End with giving them praise on good work.
