Teaching Practice 3B
A1 Beginners level

Description

This is a reading activity using Harry Potter and author J.K. Rowling as subject matter. Students will read a short text about the author's life and Ss will be given a chance to tell the class a few facts about their own lives.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To practice and improve Ss' reading comprehension and vocabulary. I want them to enjoy the text which I think will reinforce the vocabulary learned.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To improve their grammar via "chunking" words together from new vocabulary introduced.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-In (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will write "TODAY! A READING!" on the board with 2 pictures of Harry Potter underneath to interest and engage the Ss and to set the lesson context.

Pre-Reading/Listening + Vocabulary Presentation (5-10 minutes) • To prepare Ss for the text and make it accessible. To introduce vocabulary.

T will ask Ss if they know the Harry Potter story and if they have read the book/s and/or seen the film/s. T will show a photo of JK Rowling and ask Ss if they know who she is. Underneath her photo T will write "author" to introduce the vocabulary, then show photo of Orhan Pamuk to show the connection in case concept is not clear. T will present vocabulary items: Wizard, Secretary, Journalist, Unemployed via pictures and words. **Ss will identify the Harry Potter character and discuss the story, then the 2 authors and T will encourage discussion.

Activity 1 - Reading and Speaking Practice (15-20 minutes) • To give students reading and speaking practice about a subject which may interest them.

T will hand out JK Rowling text and ask Ss to quickly read it for gist. ICQs: 1) Who is it about? 2) What is it about? Then T will ask them to read it carefully and underline any words they do not know. T will tell them to ask their partner if they know any unknown words. If the partner cannot answer, and no one else in the class can answer, T will answer vocabulary questions. T will elicit retelling of the story through visual prompts. For example, T will put up the world "England".......and so on. **Ss will read the text twice. First for gist and then carefully. Ss will ask their partners any vocabulary questions, which they *may* be able to answer. Afterwards, Ss will retell parts of the story based on the prompts.

Activity 2 - Reading and Speaking Practice (5-10 minutes) • To give students reading and speaking practice about a subject which may interest them.

T will hand out "life line" questionnaire, ask "What has happened in your life?" and have Ss discuss with their partner after completion. **Following the JK Rowling example, Ss will now have a chance to discuss their own lives with their partners.

Activity 3 (If time permits) - Reading and Speaking Practice (5-10 minutes) • To give students reading and speaking practice about a subject which may interest them.

T will draw a time line of his life and write a few moments of importance to illustrate the concept, and in keeping with the "What Have You Done In Your Life?" theme. If time remains, T will ask 1 or 2 Ss to draw their time line/s on the board. **Ss will draw their own time line and share with their partner.
