Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about 4 people describing a memorable event in the context of describe a memorable event

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of memorable events

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The Ss are already familiar with the vocabulary of our context. - I will ask them to get into pairs and select the events they have both been to (they shouldn't talk about the events in detail) - I will ask them to keep their answers so we can use them later

While/Listening #1 (listening for gist) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening tasks

I will give them a table with questions of Ex.2 Pg.74 in it with enough space for them to write the answer for each speaker. Then I will ask them to listen to the recording and answer the questions for each speaker. Then I will ask them to check their answers in pairs then I will hand out the answers and ask if there is any problem.

While Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- I will ask Ss to to take a look at the questions in Ex.3 individually and try to answer them (are you allowed to tell each other your answers?- No) - Then I will put them in pairs and ask them to check their answers. (fast) - I will tell them to listen to the part again and check the answers in pairs. - Then I will put them in groups of 4 or 5 and give them the transcription of the recording and ask them to check their answers again and underline the parts that sentences are mentioned. - Then I will give them the answer key and ask if there is still any problem.

Post-Listening (14-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- I will ask students to take a look at the list they wrote at the start of the class and think about some interesting experiences they had. (monitor to make sure everyone has some ideas) - I will review the "useful language a" with some examples and ask Ss to use them and write some sentences about things they were thinking about. - Then I will tell them they will be interviewing each other so write some question using "useful language b". - I put them in pairs and say to start the interview and take notes. I will monitor and after a while I ask them to change places. - I ask Ss to say something interesting about their partner.
