W10 RL Simulations April 16 - Wednesday
A1-B1 Vets level
Materials
Main Aims
-
Use mixed conditional structures to analyze real or hypothetical past cases
Subsidiary Aims
-
Reflect on how past events influence the present (and vice versa)
Procedure (52-60 minutes)
Prompt (whole class or pairs): “Have you ever thought, ‘If we had done X, things would be easier now’?” Ask 1–2 students to give short examples Instructor reformulates into mixed conditionals on the board: “If we had started earlier, we wouldn’t be rushing now.” “If the owner had called sooner, the infection wouldn’t be this bad.”
Students receive a brief veterinary case summary Each group (or pair) discusses: What happened What the effects are now What could have been done differently How it would’ve changed things Output: Each group creates 2–3 mixed conditional statements to explain cause and imagined effect Examples: “If the vet had checked the leg thoroughly, the fracture would’ve healed by now.” “If the client weren’t afraid of tests, we would have diagnosed it last week.”
One student plays a senior vet, the other presents the case and reflects on what could have been done differently Interviewer asks: “What would you have changed if you could?” “Do you think this affects the current treatment?” “If the situation were different now, would you have made the same choice?” Switch roles halfway through
Instructor asks students to share one sentence that captured a key idea today using a mixed conditional
