Description

In this lesson, students will learn simple past forms of common verbs. They will find them in a text then they will match past and present forms. They will make full sentences and then they will use them for their past activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice the past simple form of 10 common verbs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of daily routines

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will draw a timeline and scribble TODAY and 14th Feb (St.Valentine day) T will ask what did you do on 14th Feb? T will write the word WHEN on the board, and will ask feedback from Ss to set the PAST time element. (mimics to show the past and try to get the word PAST from Ss) T will ask the Ss to work in pairs. Ss will write 1 or 2 things they remember about Olga, Connie and Andre. (from the previous session)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Copies of the text Last Saturday (p,54 1 a,b,c) will be distributed to Ss. Ss will be asked to find the word STAY in the text and underline it. Exercise 1: List of REGULAR words on page 55,2 will be given as handouts. Ss will work in pairs to find the verbs in the text and underline them. After quick review T will draw a regular and irregular heartbeat line to tell the word IRREGULAR. T will move to irregular verbs and ask Ss to underline irregular verbs in the text. T will check the results

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Past form of words will be elicited with Ss. T will write the regular and irregular verbs on the board and will write the past forms next to them. Ss will be asked to pronounce (or write on WB) past form of common verbs. Some vocabulary might be introduced here if needed depending on the Ss level of understanding. (some vocabulary has already been introduced in the previous session by Dylan and Martin)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1-Ss will be divided into 2 groups. They will have the past and the present form of 10 common verbs on two separate pages. They will match the past and present forms of the words as a group. (a mingling activity) Couples who has the past and the present form of the same verb will move to a corner. backup: If number of Ss is low then this activity will be in two steps. 1st step is regular verbs then irregular verbs. Couples with present and past form will stick them on the wall.( whole class feedback.)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher will talk about her weekend Ss will be asked to tell their story about last weekend by using some sentences from Page 53 -4a. CCQ: T will do an example with a student. Handouts will be distributed where there are missing words. Ss will work individually then check in pairs. WC feedback

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss will use the sentences from the previous exercise and underline the parts which are true for them. T will monitor. Some pairs will share their weekend with the class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

If time allows : Ss will use the sentences from the previous exercise and underline the parts which are true for them.
