Upper intermediate B2 level

Description

In this lesson, the teacher will introduce the topic of childhood food experience and have students practice some reading activities. The first part will include a conversation about this topic and teaching vocabulary. After the teacher introduce the reading text, the students will have reading activities for gist and details. Then the teacher will introduce the speaking topic and the students will have a chance to express their childhood food experiences. In these stages the student will mostly work in pairs and groups except for reading individually.

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice using a text about ' Now here, now there' in the context of childhood eating habits

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in the context of childhood eating experiences.

Procedure

Warmer/ Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students by activating their background knowledge.

-Ask students some questions about their childhood eating habits and food experience to activate their background knowledge. For example: 1) What did you like/hate to eat most in your childhood? 2) Do you remember your favorite dish? -Ask the students work in pairs to share their ideas.

Vocabulary Pre-Teaching (5-6 minutes) • To prove students useful vocabulary for the text

- Show students a video about shucking oysters. - While watching the video, stop it when necessary to elicit the meaning - Write the words on the board - Drill them - Check the concept by asking questions and showing the vocabulary

Pre-Reading (9-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Show students the blog 'Orangette' -Make them guess the type of the text and what the blog is about -Introduce the text to students -Show students 3 sentences about the text. - Ask students to find out which sentence can be the general idea of the text. - Check instructions -Check the answer

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

-Give instructions - Ask students to read the text 'Now here, now there' to find out the answers of the questions in exercise 1. - Check your instructions - Make the students check their answers in groups of 3 (or pairs depending on the attendance)

While-Reading #2 (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

- Ask students to read the text again to make notes on some topics. - Set the time limit -Check your instruction -Change student's interaction patterns and make them check their answers.

Post-Reading (9-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practise speaking and expand on what they've learned

- Make students work in groups. - Ask them to discuss their ideas about childhood eating memories. - Ask students to report their friends' eating habits.
