By the end of the lesson, Ss will be better able to use the past simple tense accurately, while expanding their vocabulary related to holiday activities and events.
Procedure (45-60 minutes)
T will start by introducing the topic of the day: "Today, we’re going to talk about some past events, such as what you did during the winter break and past holidays" T will display flashcards and photos on the smartboard of different holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Thanksgiving..etc T will write on the WB some examples to provide Ss with e.g. in the past describing how T spent their previous holidays using the past simple tense. T will give students 2-3 minutes to think and write 3-5 sentences on how they spent their previous holidays.
T asks students to read what they wrote, and T will write it on the WB. T will elicit the Ss' knowledge and understanding of the past simple tense using the sentences to explain the tense structure by underlining the verb and how to conjugate it. To allow Ss to identify the past simple tense grammatical structure of regular verbs and forms for irregular verbs. T will engage SS in drilling exercises to practice the tense conjugation and pronunciation of both regular and irregular verbs.
T will draw two squares on the board, one for the regular(e.g., verbs that end in -d, -ed, -ied, etc.), and one for the irregular verbs (e.g., became, brought, built, etc.). T will explain the differences between both and how each forms.
T will explain that the regular verbs have structure and a pattern (e.g., for verbs ending in "-e" we add d, for CVC verbs we double the final consonant and add "-ed", for Verbs ending in consonant + "y" change "y" to "i" and add "-ed") etc, But in the case of irregular verbs, they don't follow a pattern or structure, and Ss need to memorize them (e.g., go → went, eat → ate, have →had, do→ did ). Then T will use CCQ to check meaning and understanding of the structure of the tense.
Twill handle Ss a worksheet with different sentences, each contains a verb that is written in the wrong form. T will ask Ss to write the verbs correctly. T will ask Ss to check their answers in pairs when they finish. T will ask each S to read a sentence aloud to pay attention to their pronunciation and to check for any errors.
T will provide a guided practice of irregular verbs. T will display a quiz on the Wordwall website on the WB. Ss need to match base verbs to their correct past simple forms of irregular verbs. T will put Ss in pairs and give each pair a ring to use to answer the questions. T will start the quiz and take notes of the common mistakes that Ss make. After finishing the quiz, T will provide feedback and address any confusion or errors made in form and pronunciation.
T will ask each S to write a short paragraph of five sentences about what they did last holiday—four true and one false. Then Ss take turns reading their work aloud while their classmates guess which one is false. At the end of this activity, T will review some of the Ss' errors and give detailed feedback to avoid common mistakes Ss might make in the future.
