  • To introduce Ss to & give practice in free time vocabulary in the context of typical friends

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice for listening for gist, listening for specific information. To give students semi-controlled speaking practice & the opportunity to practice simple present

Procedure

GTKY Activity (3-5 minutes) • To help the teacher and students get to know each others names and access Ss ability to understand directions

Teacher brings a ball, T says ''I am ..., What is your name?'' Teacher says they will play a game. She then pretends to be a student and catch the ball and says " I am ..." "you are..." and explains to students to throw the ball and tell their name and two of their friends' name. Students catch the ball say "I am... you are...,you are..." and throw the ball.

Lead in (7-10 minutes) • To activate previously learnt vocabulary of Unit Expat files and add new vocabulary words such as watch, play, listen, travel, study

Show: Slights/pictures that represents objects or concepts: television, cinema, dancing, sports, shopping, restaurants, music. Ask: "what is this?" Students tell her what those objects are. Ex: "television, cinema, etc." Show: A Flash Card or a Slight with the objects' picture Ask: "What do I do with a TV?", "Do I eat a TV?", "Do I go to a Tv?" Students give answer Show: the correct verb for the item from the slight. Ask: "What do I do with cinema?", "Do I drink cinema?", "Do I listen cinema?" Students guess the right answer Show: the correct verb for the item from the slight. Ask: "What do I do with dancing?", "Do I have dancing?", "Do I listen dancing?", "Do I drink dancing?" Students guess the correct answer. Show:the correct verb for the item from the slight. Ask: " How about sports?" "I....sports", "I go sports", "I listen sports?" Students guess the correct answer. Show: the correct verb for the item from the slight. Ask: " How about shopping?" "I...shopping" "I listen shopping?" Students guess the correct answer Ask: " What do I do with music?" "I go music?", "I live music?" Students guess the correct answer Show: A full list Say: There are two more verbs Show: A picture represents study Ask: What is this? Mime it. Show the correct word Show: A picture represents travel. Ask: "What is this?"Mime it. Show: the correct word.

Vocabulary Practice (3-5 minutes) • Match the newly learnt phrases with the pictures.

Put them in pairs tell them to work together and match the phrases given with the pictures on the wall. Once they finish ask them to check each others. Show them the answers from the slight.

New Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To understand the meaning of the word "alone" in the typical activities context.

Show a slight with a picture of yourself with friends and say "I am with my friends", "I go to cinema with my friends", "I go to dancing with my friends." Show a slight with only one person watching television and say " I watch TV alone" " I study alone" CCQ: Ask: Do I have friends when I am alone?

Questions and Answers (4-5 minutes) • Ask and answer the questions from the Ex: 2 by using newly learnt phrases in a sentence

Teacher gives the questionnarries to students she tells them to work in pairs and ask the questions and answer the questions. Then teacher asks them to tell her what their friends' had told them.

Pre-Listening Activity (3-5 minutes) • To get prepared for the coming listening, have a general oppinion on the listening texts context

Put students into groups and ask them to read the part and answer"what is it about?" Give students the questions and tell them to write short answers to them. Tell students to check their answers with their pairs. Ask them to give answers one by one.

Listening Activity (7-10 minutes) • To listen for details

Teacher gives the students a box, ask them if there are any words that they don't know about. They may say: personal, movies, fashion, politics. Teacher demonstrates them by miming and using flash cards. She asks one of them to read the words. Then explains that she will play the CD and if they hear the word they should tick it. CCQ: Do I tick all of them? CD says women do I tick? CD doesn't say boys do I tick? When they finish listening, teacher asks them to work in pairs and check each others answers. Then she asks them the words and if they have ticks or not.
