Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask ss: Which is the most popular word in the English language? the. used twice in this sentence!

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Ask ss to complete exercise 3a on page 89. Instructions: Use only a, an, the or leave as a blank. Work individually. Time for exercise 5 minutes. Check answers with your partner. Elicit answers as an open group. Note the errors.

Teach (12-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Demonstrate with an example. Yesterday, I went to a café. I ordered a coffee. The coffee was delicious. I watched a movie. The movie was boring. Highlight the general rules on a flipchart. Nominate ss to elicit examples for each rule. Ask ss to relook at the exercise and check their answers with a partner.

Test #2 (10-12 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Pair ss. Ask them to choose a topic from 3c. Have a conversation with their partner. Ask questions like Why? Why not? What about you? Demonstrate with a strong ss. Monitor and make notes while ss converse. Help the weaker ss, if necessary.

Free practice (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Group ss per table. Play Kaboom. with gap fills with articles as the quiz questions.
