Procedure (82-90 minutes)
Prompt Discussion: “Have you ever looked back and thought, ‘If only I had done something differently’?” In pairs, students discuss a general situation from life or work Instructor elicits a few key reflections and writes examples on board E.g., “If I had left earlier, I would have caught the bus.”
Quick Refresher: Use 2–3 examples on the board from the grammar lesson Students transform one or two of their real reflections into third conditional sentences “If I had double-checked the symptoms, I wouldn’t have missed the reaction.”
Controlled Speaking 20 mins Students receive prompt slips with professional or general actions e.g., “Didn’t check the label,” “Didn’t isolate the patient,” “Forgot to confirm appointment,” etc. Each partner makes a third conditional sentence from the card After 4–5 prompts, they switch partners for another round Guided Task 35 mins Briefly describe a past case (real or prompted) Reflect using at least two third conditional sentences: Other students may ask follow-up “what if…” questions Whole Class Wrap-Up 20 mins Debrief: What was the most surprising “What if” shared today? What types of third conditional sentences came up most?
