Abc Flashcards

Main Aims

  • Use the third conditional to express alternative outcomes in the past

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reflect on veterinary cases and decisions with increased fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Prompt Discussion: “Have you ever looked back and thought, ‘If only I had done something differently’?” In pairs, students discuss a general situation from life or work Instructor elicits a few key reflections and writes examples on board E.g., “If I had left earlier, I would have caught the bus.”

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Quick Refresher: Use 2–3 examples on the board from the grammar lesson Students transform one or two of their real reflections into third conditional sentences “If I had double-checked the symptoms, I wouldn’t have missed the reaction.”

Productive Task(s) (63-65 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Controlled Speaking 20 mins Students receive prompt slips with professional or general actions e.g., “Didn’t check the label,” “Didn’t isolate the patient,” “Forgot to confirm appointment,” etc. Each partner makes a third conditional sentence from the card After 4–5 prompts, they switch partners for another round Guided Task 35 mins Briefly describe a past case (real or prompted) Reflect using at least two third conditional sentences: Other students may ask follow-up “what if…” questions Whole Class Wrap-Up 20 mins Debrief: What was the most surprising “What if” shared today? What types of third conditional sentences came up most?

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Instructure provides feedback. Exit Ticket: Students write one sentence using the third conditional about today’s lesson or a memory:
