Description

In this lesson, students will work in pairs to exchange information in order to figure out the details of the lives of four different expats. Ss will then read a short story about an American expat and try to figure out where he is from. Afterward, the Ss will produce and share their own short expat stories with their partners, while their partner tries to guess which country the Ss is referring to.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for accuracy & fluency in the context of expats and free-time activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To consolidate & give Ss the opportunity to practice free time vocabulary.
  • To review & give Ss semi-controlled & freer practice of simple present yes/no questions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Post picture of my friend Latoya. Elicit questions from Ss using "does she" to get information about my friend. Post picture of my friend Fred. Elicit questions from Ss using "Does he" to get info.

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Divide class into group A and group B. Try something like "Who likes Fred?" "Who likes Latoya?" Pass out TsBK worksheet, Half A to Group A, Half B to Group B. Put TsBK 2A WB Demo slide up Show Ss how to make 3rd person does questions using the demo slide.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ss will work in pairs to write questions based on 3rd person singular. "Where does Frank Work?" / "Does Frank Work?" Monitor to ensure Ss are on task Feedback: Take sample of Qs from Ss, put on board. Refer to demo slide to model questions Choose 1 S from each group A & B and have them demo the next task for the class.

Productive Task(s) (11-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss from Group A work with a partner from group B to complete the Expat Lifestyles WS. Monitor to ensure Ss are on task / assist. For each person on Ws, select one S to be that person. "Who wants to be Frank?" Ss ask "Frank" Qs and "Frank" answers them.

Feedback and Error Correction (15-16 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Pass out speaking exercise, put up on OHP. Select Ss to read each sentence to class. Repeat the whole reading to give FB. Elicit answers from Ss, "Where does he come from?" "What does he eat?"... Ss discuss in pairs to find out where he lives. FB. Next, Ss do exercise 2-4.
