Elementary level

Description

Materials

Abc wb

Main Aims

  • To introduce and give Ss practice in Present Simple – yes/no questions & short answers in the context of typical friends.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in listening for specific information and semi-controlled speaking for accuracy.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To arouse interest in the topic and activate their top-down processing

Ss will answer the questions by using the clues they're given through the web-page. Do you remember the topic? What's the topic? Are men and women really different? According to Mr.Palmer what are different? I will write the answers on the board.

More Detailed Task-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To listen for more detailed understanding of the text

Ss will focus on the Listening ex3 p.25. Ss will read the sentences through before they listen. Ask them what these sentences are about. Men or women? Key words will be underlined. After playing the recording I am going to get them to peer-check before w/c FB. Based on their performance I might need to play the recording again.

Post-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To check their understanding of the listening and develop their speaking skills as a sub-aim.

HOs will be provided to work solo. They will put a tick if they agree or a cross if they disagree. Then they will compare their answers with their partners. I will model what I want Ss to say, e.g. I think.../I don't think... I will put Ss in pairs to compare their answers. Monitor Ss while they are doing pair work.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To arouse interest in the topic and to introduce simple present yes/no questions and short answers

I will use one of the statements to elicit a Yes/No question & short answer from the previous activity. "Men talk about sports." I will drill this for pronunciation. I will encourage Ss to make Yes/No qus based on the statements in the previous exercise (from Listening ex3) and give some controlled oral practice of the target language

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will analyse the form of the questions from the previous activity. I will elicit the forms from the students. I will put them in pairs and make them work on HO 3. As w/c activity we will write the answer on the wb.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will get Ss to make the questions first in ex 1 then listen & answer I will use the listening as an answer key for their questions. They will then check the speakers’ answers. I will get Ss to peer-check before taking whole-class FB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

For ex3, I will model the question and answer with a student. Then I will put Ss into pairs to practise asking and answering the same questions from ex1 & the listening. I will monitor and pay attention to their pronunciation.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will use exercise 4 to get ss produce more questions with the help of previous exercises. I will provide some prompts to inspire ss. At the end of the activity I will ask for general FB on what they find out about eachother.
