Procedure

Warmer/ lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Engage Ss interest by asking them to say what's happening in the pictures on page 30 (they will see the projected version). try to elicit crime, anti social behaviour, vandalism, graffiti, begging. - Put Ss into pairs. Tell them to work through Ex.1a. Monitor and help if needed. Ask a few students to feed back to the class. (skip Ex. 1b & 1c)

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Focus Ss attention on the picture on pg.31 (Ex.2a) and elicit what's happening

While-Reading #1 (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Give Ss time to skim through the text and find answer (Ex. 2b) (just skim, they do not need to understand everything)

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-Put Ss into pairs. Tell them to read the text for details and answer the questions (Ex.3 pg.30). (they need to read more carefully)- Monitor and help if necessary. - change partners. hand out the answers and let them check the answers in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- In pairs ask them to do the Ex.4 pg.30. Remind Ss they are looking for phrases in case they try to look for an individual word. Monitor and help if necessary. - Change partners if possible. Hand out the answers and get Ss to check theirs in pairs.

Vocabulary (matching exercise) (5-8 minutes) • Introduce vocabulary related to crime

-For Ex.5 pg.30 I give Ss a matching exercise. they can use the text to guess the meanings. Monitor and help if necessary. -Hand out answers and get Ss to check them in pairs.

Speaking (10-12 minutes) • Practice fluency in the context of crime

-Put students in 3-4 groups. Read the questions in Ex.6 pg.30 and check vocabulary (lenient, harsh). give them time to discuss the questions. - Choose one question and ask groups to give their opinion in open class.
