Description

In this lesson students will have the opportunity to learn and practice the functional language required for talking about one's state of health and offering suggestions to people who don't feel well as well as being sympathetic towards them.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for talking about the state of one's health in the context of "health problems"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of the illness related vocabulary in the context of "health problems"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows some pictures to the students. Pictures are mainly show some health problems and solutions. Teacher asks students to look at pictures and discuss them in their groups and try to explain what the pictures show and how are they related to each other.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher shows two photos in which two people are talking to each other. Teacher asks students to listen to two conversations and match each conversation to the photos A and B. The teacher gives the students picture of a few people who are apparently waiting to see a doctor. Each of these people has a different problem. (The initial picture of Unit 10C P. 82). The teacher ask students to listen to these people talking about their problems. Students should match each problem with the relevant picture.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher will give function highlighting HO (Highlight Stage HO 1) Students will work in groups to answer the questions. T will provide feedback. The teacher using the slides highlights the functional language used in the conversations. The teacher models and drills the highlighted TL. The teacher will give Ss the language function categorization HO (Highlight Stage HO 2) Ss work in groups. Feedback will be provided.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher gives students the vocabulary checking handouts and asks them to work in groups and classify health problem and solutions according the correct phrase. Then there is WC feedback. The teacher checks if any of vocabularies is unclear for students.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The Ss using the disappearing dialogue method will memorise the dialogues. The teacher models and drills using the mentioned method.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T will give students HO for Semi Controlled Practice Students Work in groups to answer T will provide feedback

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will play the game "Good Friend". students will randomly choose a piece of paper from a box. on the papers there are pictures showing a certain health problem. Ss have a health problem now. Ss are nice friends and want to help each other. teacher will give students HOs for the activity. They should talk to as many people as they can and offer them advice about their problems. They should right down their friends' names and their health problem as well as their advice. this game will be followed by feedback and delayed error correction.
