In this lesson, the students will read about places to visit in Thailand and will learn new vocabulary within this context. They will read a text about Phuket and Bangkok, using gist, sorting specific information about these places, and doing detailed reading tasks. They will follow this up with a writing activity related to the overall context of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide the students with the opportunity to read for gist, match phrases to places and extract detailed information within the context of visiting Thailand

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with the opportunity to practice new words for fluency usinng a writing acitivity within the context of visiting interesting places


Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the context of visiting interesting places

T to show a presentation with one of her pretend friends visiting Istanbul Elicit what this friend is doing based on the pictures Ss to work in pairs and make suggestions of 3 places to visit in Istanbul and 3 things to eat in Istanbul Ss to share with WC

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make the topic engaging

T to show a video about Thailand Ss to work in groups to decide 3 things we can say about Thailand Ss to share with WC

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a gist reading task and expose them to the text

T to give HO with reading text and ask Ss to read quickly (1-2 min), specify there is no need to know all the words and details, read for a general idea T to give cut outs with different phrases from the text describing Phuket and Bangkok T to split Ss in groups of 4 Ss to work in groups to put the phrases under the correct place (stick them to the posters on the walls) Ss to check each others posters

Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To introduce new words from the text in order to faciliate the detailed reading task

T to elicit meaning of different words from the text (using pictures, gestures) T to focus on pronunciation T to give list of words with pictures and definitions next to them to take home

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a more detailed reading task with T/F questions

T to ask Ss to read text again concentrating on the details Ss to answer T/F questions alone Ss to check answers in pairs Ss to share answers with WC Try to elicit why for false answers

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to use the material from the text and expand on what they've learned

T to split Ss in groups of 4 (line, when did you visit Topkapi palace - yesterday/never) T to put map of Istanbul on board Ss to choose 1 tourist attraction in Istanbul they want to write about T to show example of brochures on board Elicit from Ss what things we can put in a brochure (where is it? is it old? is it good to visit? when is the best time to visit?) Ss to write 3-4 things for the tourist attraction they chose (on colourful paper bubbles supplied by teacher) Put the bubbles on A3 "brochure" next to map Ss from the different groups to read their bubbles from the board
