Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of choosing a partner

Procedure

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To test students knowledge of the target vocabulary

Students will be given a HO to do a matching exercise as a test. They have 2 minutes to do this test. ICQs: Are you going to do the exercise in pairs? How much time do you have? Then the students will check their answers in pairs. This will be done in 1 minute. While they are busy peer checking, the teacher will monitor to choose the vocabularies that need to be clarified. Then she will ask them to write their answers on the board, and corrects the ones that are wrong.

Teach (3-5 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The teacher will write some of the vocabulary items on the board to clarify the form and pronunciation. Drilling will be done as a practice of pronunciation.

Test #2 (5-7 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

The teacher will tell the students that they are going to read a text, in which Robin describes his wife, then she gives the students a HO of a listening transcript in which Robin is talking about Francoise. The teacher tells them that after reading it they should be able to describe Robin's wife. They will read it individually in 2 minutes. Then in pairs they should discuss Francoise's character. The teacher asks some of the students to write some descriptions of her character on the board. Then the students themselves will do error correction.

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to practice the target language

Each student will be given a sticker on which some target vocabulary is written. They have to stick it on their foreheads. In pairs they will describe each other. Then some of the students will be asked to describe their tags. Error correction will be done on the WB.

Freer practice#1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Each student will write s description about him/herself on a piece of paper, fold it and throw it into a box. Then the teacher will ask them to pick a slip of paper each, read it out loud and other students have to figure out who it is.

Freer Practice#2 (3-5 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to describe their ideal partner

The teacher asks the students to talk to each other about their ideal partner in 2 minutes, then report to class. Error correction will be done after reporting to class. ICQs: How much time do you have?
