TP 7 Grammer/Reading Gerund vs Inf.
B1/B2 level

Description

In this lesson, Ss focus on the difference between Gerunds and Infinitives. The lesson begins with a simple question involving fame to engage the students in the context. The text is read quickly for gist and then Ss work on a simple exercise in order to be in introduced to the TL. This is followed by another exercise which gives an example of the form and meaning of the TL, while allowing the Ss to discover the rules. The final guided discovery activity is a freer event, asking Ss to construct their own sentences with a partner using Gerunds/Infinitives to form and answer questions.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the usage of gerunds versus infinitives in the context of fame

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about lifestyle in the context of fame

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To activate the students interest in the topic of fame

T asks Ss "Did you ever dream of being famous? How would your lifestyle be different than it is today?"

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context to the TL via reading for Gist

Ss will read the text for gist. T will ask Ss "Do these celebrities seem to like their lifestyles?" Discuss with class (5 min)

Guided Activity 1/Self Discovery (Controlled) (12-16 minutes) • To introduce the TL via reading and guided activity

T tells Ss to read text again alone, this time circling all the gerunds, and underlining all the infinitive forms. (5 mins) After, Ss discuss their answers in pairs (3 mins) While Ss do the exercise, T writes two example sentences from text on the board using inf. and gerund forms. "Being a star was never as much fun as dreaming of being one" - Gerund "It is not necessary to be rich and famous and be happy. It is only necessary to be rich." - Inf. T checks over Ss answers w/ class (3mins) W/class, T elicits the meaning and form of the example sentences. (5 mins)

Guided Activity 2 (Semi-Controlled) (10-15 minutes) • To further lead Ss towards comprehending TL

T tells SS to use table #2 ex. 1 to complete the Gerund H/O alone (5-8 mins). Ss check answers in pairs (2 mins) T checks classes answers together and asks to confirm which rule it applies to in chart. (5 mins).

Guided Activity 3 (Free) (8-10 minutes) • To further lead Ss towards comprehending TL via free activity

Ss in pairs, ask and answer questions to find out if they've got what it takes to be a celeb. Create and Answer questions using Gerund/Inf. T gives example "Would you refuse to go to a club or restaurant that looked cheap?" or "Would you..." "Do you..."

Error Correction (5-10 minutes) • To correct incorrect usage of TL

While Ss share answer with class, T uses different correction techniques (fingers, backtracking, etc), writing questions on WB that seem pertinent to lesson. T gives out H\O answer key
