Description

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to learn new vocabulary within the context of “news”. They will also listen to some news and they will practice listening for gist, specific information and detail. They will also review some vocabulary related to the context of “news”.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about some TV news stories in the context of "The News"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of verbs and nouns from news stories in the context of "The News"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will play a short video (BBC News Intro Theme) to Ss and tries to ask the Ss what they think about the video. (Eliciting "the news") The teacher tries to set the context by asking a few questions: - Where do you usually get your news? the TV, the radio, newspapers or the internet? - Do you watch or listen to the news everyday? If yes, at what time of day? - What was the news yesterday?

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

The teacher tries to elicit and pre-teach the vocabulary by asking students what they usually see or hear on the news and by showing them some pictures. The teacher models and drills the vocabularies T will briefly explain irregular past simple forms.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

The teachers gives students some photos and ask them what they think about the photos. The teacher tells students that they will listen to the news and the news is related to the photos. Ss should try to match every photo with particular news. The teacher then gives the specific information questions' HO to the students asks them to ready through the questions quickly. The students will listen once more to the news and answer the questions. The students can check their answers together and then there will be WC feedback.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

The teacher will give the students the detailed questions' HO and students have time to read the questions in part A. Students will listen to the news once more and will try to answer the questions. This will be followed by peer checking and then there will be WC feedback. The teacher tells students they will listen to two people talking about the news and they will answer questions in Part B. If it is required they can listen twice (they already know the context and they should be able to answer the questions by listening only once) Peer checking and WC feedback.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learned

The teacher tells students they will play a game. They will sit in groups of 5 (or 4. there should be four groups). T will give the envelopes which contain a news headline. on a desk in front of the class there are different cut ups. Ss, one by one, should come to the desk try to pick a relevant piece of the news and go to their group. they should complete the news article stick the whole thing on a piece of paper and stick it to the wall. Finally the news articles will be given to the Ss as feedback.
