Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about films, music, news in the context of films

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of the words and phrases based on the listening context

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To engage the students in the topic the teacher sets some questions: Do you like watching films? What type of films do you prefer? How about the James Bond films? The students are sharing their impressions on the films in general and about the James Bond films and telling their favourite Bond films in pairs. The teacher is arranging one of the songs of Bond films here to create the atmosphere for the topic and the ss may talk about their favourite James Bond films and songs as well. The warmer gives the idea that we are going to have class on the given topic

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this section, the teacher is moving the ss to the next step letting them predict the topic of the listening, as the listening is going to be about the film writer, the T displays some pics of the author of bond books, the ss are engaged in brainstorming about the pic. This stage prepares the ss to the listening giving the ss clearer idea, or discussion about the some details of the author eliciting the information from the ss. The ss may know the author from the previous session and talk about him or just guess randomly saying some facts about him. In this part the ss are not discussing the details of the gist listening just giving the idea about the author whom they are going to hear, remembering or gathering some information before the listening

While-Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

For the gist, the teacher puts some short questions. The ss answer these questions without going into details The ss do not focus on the detailed comprehension of the text. Ss need to grasp the overall idea and impression of the listening the need to listen and answer the questions. The ss choose the correct answers from the given questions

pre- teach vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • to solve the possible problems the ss may have while listening

In this stage, I am going to give the ss some key words and phrases focusing mainly on the meaning and making sure that they understand these words and phrases. The students will participate in the clarification of the meaning and give their own example to be sure of the use.

While-Listening #2 (6-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The listening text is about the author of the James Bond book, Ian Fleming. This section of the listening challenges the ss putting questions that are more detailed and the ss need to listen very carefully to answer the questions. The ss are going to answer T/F questions. Before listening the teacher gives the instructions and and HO, then the ss takes some time to read the question and underline the key words to catch the meaning easily and fast. If there are some problems among the ss to understand the question the teacher puts them in pairs to clarify the meaning of the questions together

Post-Listening (8-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In the stages above the ss listened and discussed about Bond films and mainly the author of the Bond films, Ian Fleming. To follow up the listening activity the ss are going to produce freer activity. The teacher asks the ss to think and talk about different (based on their knowledge) action films, action film writers, or screenwriters. It can be world or local ones depending on the ss choice of the books and films or series they have ever or recently watched or read
