Main Aims

  • Students will be able to use can or cannot to describe permissions and rules, particularly in the context of traffic signs

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will learn new vocabulary related to traffic signs
  • Students will use can and cannot in spoken sentences
  • Students will develop ideas to make sentences using can and cannot

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To start this lesson, I will project on the screen some traffic signs and I'll ask Ss what they "can" and what they "can't" do according the traffic sign

Text work (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for target language through a text or situation

I'll show Ss a conversation between a police officer giving a car fine to a citizen who has been caugth speading. The conversation includes sentences using can (TL. And finally, the conversation is not in the rigth order, therefore Ss will have to organize it correctly

Language Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING I'll quicky give some definitions and examples of TL. (modal verb - Can) FORM Can + subj + v. infini.. + comple.. Can you tell me what I did wrong? Subj + can't + v. infini.. + comple.. You can´t exceed the speed limit Subj + can + v. infini.. + comple.. You can pay it online PRONUNCIATION From Cambridge dictionary website, I will show ss the proper pronunciation, using the international pronunciation alphabet (IPA) and then, ss will drill, using the same 3 sentences to practice. Can you tell me what I did wrong? You can´t exceed the speed limit You can pay it online At the same time, I will show ss the stress of the sentences to practice the pronunciation of these sentences.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

To complete this controlled practice stage, I'll use the conversation one more time, but this time I'll ask Ss to fill in the gaps using the words "can" and "can't" Good afternonn Sr, _____ I see your license and registration, please? Of course officer, here you go Do you know why I´ve stopped you? No, officer. _____ you tell me what I did wrong? You were speeding. You ____ exceed the speed limit-it’s dangerous Oh, I’m really sorry. I didn´t realize. ______ you let me off with a warning this time? I understand but I _____ ignore the violation. I have to give you a fine How much is the fine? And where ____ I pay it? The fine is $100. You _____ pay it online or at the local traffic office

Free Practice (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

To conclude this leason I will split Ss into two different teams. I will show two different traffic signs to Ss and they will have to create a quick conversation about them using TL. After that; I will display other two traffic signs with some information on it. Ss will have to discuss and create 6 sentences using TL
