Materials

Abc Teacher made handout
Abc Whiteboard/Overhead Projection (OHP)

Main Aims

  • I will have students practice speaking with each other using sentences past simple irregular verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will write and speak using regular or irregular verbs from this lesson or prior lessons.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will greet the class and show them pictures of famous historical people. I will use 1 known figure (Einstein) and the other 4 will be of Ottoman decent, (A Sultan, Attaturk, etc.) I will ask them if they know anything about the people on the pictures that I have placed on the WB/OHP. I will pair them up and have them speak amongst themselves about the historical figures. I will ask them ICQ's to clarify that they understand what they are to speak about.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will break the students up into teams and I will use a teacher made handout of past simple words (irregular verbs) and the students will have to answer them by doing the activity of "Running Dictation" with their partner to complete the assignment. The students will have to read the questions about the famous people and then tell that answer to the other student to answer their questions. I will place the questions sporadically around the room so that teams will actively be speaking with each other to achieve the goal of interacting and answering the questions. Students will also write out their answers on the handout. I will check a few answers and give fb on their writing.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will make a handout of past simple (irregular verbs) so that the students will practice sentences correctly and speak with each other about it, similar to the activity # 9 from the student coursebook. I will pair students to new partners so that they can converse with one another.

Productive Task(s) 1 (6-9 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will instruct the students to write similar questions about famous people, first, alone then they will compare answers with a partner. I will check sporadically for errors while students are writing and speaking. I will elicit answers and place a few mistakes on the board to see if the students will correct them.

Productive Task (2) (3-10 minutes) • Conversing about themselves with others

I will adjust activity #9 so that students can converse amongst themselves about themselves with a teacher made handout. I will give clear instructions and have Ss give me FB (ICQ's) so that I know that they understand the objective. Students will first work individually and then in groups or mingle amongst themselves.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will now have the students sit down and ask them to give me feedback of "Something that they did last night" I will check for problems with past simple words/ irregular verbs place answers on WB and If time permits I will add the activity of pg 120
