Description

In this lesson the students will listen to a text about a birthday party and will be exposed to the past simple of the verb "be". They will listen for gist and for detail within this context. This will be followed up by a practice exercise as they tell about their own party in the past.

Main Aims

  • To provide opportunity for gist and detailed listening within the context of birthday parties in the past

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce Ss to the past simple of the verb "be" and provide opportunity to practice when describing a party from the Ss past

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson about celebrations in the past and engage the students

T will show pictures of her own birthday celebration last year While showing the pictures, try to elicit from Ss what is happening T to monitor if Ss have some prior knowledge of past simple of "be"

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T to elicit yesterday, last year and types of celebrations from Ss Ss to share with WC a small detail about their celebration last year (birthday, Bayram, wedding anniversary) - ex. where/how many people were there

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a gist listening task based on the listening exercise provided

T to ask Ss to listen for gist and think about 2 questions - Who is talking (telling the story)? and How was the party (ex. good, bad, boring, not good) Show picture of the family related to the activity (p. 46, Unit 6) Ask Ss not to take notes or write anything while listening Use ICQs to confirm understanding of the task Ss to listen and think about the 2 questions T to ask them to share quickly in pairs the answer to the questions Ss to share the answers with WC

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a detailed listening task based on the provided listening activity

T to give instructions to Ss on the task and give HO with several items the Ss need to identify from the text (place, food, drink, etc.) Ss to listen to the recording T to monitor while they are listening if they start to find out some of the answers Ss to try to fill in the necessary information alone T to ask if they need to hear the recording one more time Ss to share answers in pairs Put answer keys on walls for Ss to go and check their answers

Grammar (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the past simple of the verb "be"

T to give script of the listening text to Ss Ss to underline all the places with was, wasn't, were and weren't T to draw a table on the board with Positive and Negative of the verb Elicit from students when to use was and wasn't and were and weren't CCQ to confirm understanding - Today vs Yesterday, this year vs last year examples

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to use the vocabulary and tense they have learned and practice these

T to read her own story (based on the pictures from the Lead-in) Ss to fill in the information provided in the T's story for place, No. of people, food, etc. Ss to write/think a short story for their celebration Ss to share in pairs their story T to split Ss in 4 groups (using adjectives from previous lesson) - happy, friendly, great, nice Ss in groups to share their stories Make a list of celebrations and places for each group on the board Optional Ask some Ss to tell about their party/celebration to WC Optional Ss to ask T more details about her birthday party
