Description

In this lesson, ss will be exposed to reading activities about the economics as the main aim of teaching. The lesson starts with a lead-in phase in which ss are prompted to speak in pairs. Afterwards, the reading is presented through different activities. Finally, the ss will have speaking as the free practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practices using a text about power and money in the context of world of economics

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussions in the context of the world of economics

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1) T displays some pictures on the screen on the screen about daily life and economy. 2) T asks ss "What do you think are the main economic problems in the world and in your country today?" . T asks ss to discuss their ideas in pairs. ICQ: Will you speak in groups? 3) T gets some of their opinions.

Pre teaching of vocabulary (7-9 minutes) • To teach the meanings of some keywords that the ss might need

Teacher follows Elicitation,Concept checking, Drilling, Writing stages for the words below: Jargon: What do we say for the technical and specialized words that are used by particular group of people like engineers, lawyers, doctors, etc.?..... CCQ"Can engineers understand legal jargon? No" straightforward: e:"can you say a synonym for simple, uncomplicated?" CCQ"Are straight forward tasks easy to do?" distribute: e:"How do we say to give sth out to people?" CCQ: "Are we talking about receiving?, Are we talking about giving to one person or to people?" "Do we distribute something as a gift or for another purpose?" grass root: How do we refer to common and ordinary people of the society? CCQ"Are leaders and rulers the grass roots? the masses "the ordinary people who form the largest part of the society" CCQ"Are we talking about one person or people? to expound "to give a detailed explanation of something. CCQ "Is it one person talking or it is a conversation?, Are we talking for short time or long time?"

Gist reading (Prediction) (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1)T displays some lines on the board.T asks the whole class "Do you agree with this? ". 2) T elicits some ideas. 3) T tells ss "Please read this text to see if the author agrees with these lines or not" 4) Ss must read alone to get the gist. 5) T asks ss to check their answers with their partner. 6) T provides the feedback.

While-Reading#1 (10-9 minutes) • To provide students with specific information reading task.

1)T asks ss to do an intensive reading in order to find six example of "why the author thinks economists are not to be trusted?" 2) T ask ss to discuss their answers in group 3) T elicits the answers

While-Reading2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1)T asks ss to work in groups and find how does the author express these ideas. 2) T asks ss to mingle and discuss the anwers with the other groups answers. 3) T provides the correct answers.

Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to have free speaking

1)T asks ss to discuss in groups "If you were the ruler of your country, what would you do to change the economy?" 2) T puts some ill formed sentences on the board to be corrected by the ss.
