Then students complete 3 flashcard prompts in pairs: I was examining a dog when... The power went out while... I was finishing the surgery when...
Task 1: Procedure: In groups of 3–4, students receive 5 events and must invent an incident timeline using the correct tenses. Each group: Chooses a context (clinic, trip, house emergency, etc.) Arranges the sequence of actions and interruptions Tells the story orally Each student adds 2 lines to the story using both past tenses. Task 2: Procedure: Use open discussion prompts (e.g., a storm started, the dog ran away, the vet slipped). Students choose one and share personal or imagined experiences: What were you doing? What happened? How did you solve it? Instructor moves between groups and notes common patterns or issues.
Procedure: Students write: One sentence using past continuous One sentence using past simple Then they pair up and exchange to peer-check for accuracy and clarity. Instructor finishes by correcting 2–3 examples on the board.
