Subsidiary Aims

  • Identify sequence and interruption using past simple + past continuous

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write prompts on board: What were you doing when your last work interruption happened? What were you doing when your last pet problem started? Students discuss 1–2 personal examples in pairs using: I was ___ when ___ happened.

Pre-Reading/Listening (13-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Quick board review of verbs likely in the audio: check, treat, feed, clean, bark, run, cry, fall, hurt Write them in past simple and continuous form as a class. Listening Lab

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students listen and answer: Who is speaking? What happened? What went wrong or interrupted the routine?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Procedure: Second listening. Students take structured Cornell Notes: Left column: past verbs (in simple and continuous) they heard Right column: what was happening or interrupted Bottom: summary sentence using both tenses

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In pairs or trios, students retell the story they heard using their notes. Then: Add one sentence using past continuous Add one detail using past simple
